Just spotted these ...

I've just noticed in our front garden bed that that our very first crocus is open and another is on its way so I just had to post a quickie.

The crocuses (croci - which is it?) are from a mixed species pack that I planted last year so it's their first appearance. I know the one that is open is Cream Beauty as we have some of those elsewhere in the garden. Thanks to Mark's post I think the other must be Gipsy Girl.

Not brilliant photos as I couldn't get near enough due to muddy soil by I just wanted to mark the occasion!

  1. So, "Snap", then... I have a few very pale purple ones out now. Well, when I say out, I don't mean open. There hasn't been enough sun for that.

    1. According to the packaging, Mark I should have three more varieties in the front bed. One is a mid purple, one light purple with a white centre and one white with pale purple streaks so we shall see!

  2. Beautiful sunshine for you to see everyday...at least for a while!! incidentally the plural can be either crocuses or croci, so you were right on both counts!!

  3. I keep thinking that it's early to be seeing bulbs, I'm forgetting that we're nearly in to February. I love the Cream Beauty. I've been looking at apple trees today at Swillington. Do you know anything about Gloster? It looks a good candidate, self fertile and on dwarf rootstock so I can keep it in a container.

  4. Very pretty, but how long before the birds peck them to pieces (well, that is what always happens with the few brave crocus which struggle into flower here!)

    1. I wondered that too BW especially after seeing a bullfinch pecking the mahonia flowers but she was being very delicate. I wondered if she was picking the nectar

  6. Fortunately it was very hot and summery here today otherwise I would be worried that summer was ending too fast and heading north. I do like crocuses though.

    1. So do I Liz but one crocus does not a summer make - it's been cold here today!

  7. Definitely an occasion worth marking! I glimpsed the first hellebore flower yesterday, and if it ever stops raining /trying to snow for long enough want to go and rummage for possible other emerging gems.
