Meet Ruby

This post is very different to my usual Monday posts.

Last week this sentence at the beginning of my post 'My excuse is that at the moment I'm taking advantage of a rare peaceful period when instead of a ball of fluffy energy charging around the house finding mischief where there should be none to be found as the the said ball of fluff is curled up under my computer chair.' generated more interest than the rest of my post. Several comments requested more information about the ball of fluff so here goes.

Ruby is a phantom miniature poodle puppy. Phantom doesn't mean she is a ghostly apparition - it's the name given to poodles with her colouring. She will be seventeen weeks old on Wednesday and joined our family just over eight weeks ago before the current lockdown situation.

Regular readers will know that we lost our lovely Tivvy in January and were debating whether we could welcome another dog so quickly but Tivvy left a gaping hole that needed filling. We saw an advert for the litter of which Ruby was one fifth and decided to take the plunge even though this meant two return journeys to Bristol - one hundred miles away. One journey to meet the litter and another to collect Ruby.

Ruby settled in quickly and in no time at all was up to all kinds of mischief. Everything, however tiny is picked up and whenever possible taken into her bed to chew and determine whether it is potential food.

She found the TV to be fascinating.

In fact she finds everything fascinating. She loves watching the world go by from both house and car windows.

Until she was fully inoculated, Ruby wasn't allowed out to anywhere that other dogs had been so we practised her being on a lead in the garden.
11 April and last photo 26 April
Having never experienced grass before she was fairly hyper at first, ripping up grass and bouncing around but she quickly settled and was soon walking nicely.

After her second inoculation she had her first visit to the allotment and she has also had short walks during the permitted exercise time.

There are periods of calm amidst the play and general mischief and Ruby loves laying on her back for  tummy rub.

We decided that we should have named Ruby - Jekyll and Hyde - sometimes she is cute and cuddly and at other times when she decides to 'play' bite, run off with clothing or emulate the Andrex dog she is a little monster.

  1. Oh my goodness, she's adorable! I know she'll be very happy with you and she'll love being an allotment dog. Poodles are wonderful. Bertie is part poodle and has lots of poodle traits which are great. Welcome Ruby!

    1. She should have had her first puppy trim in the week lockdown started so we are hoping the groomers aren’t too long before they are back. How are you managing Bertie fur. We would have a go ourselves but Ruby’s such a bag of worms - it’s bad enough bathing her.

  4. You and Martyn are brave souls. A puppy is so much work but well worth the effort. What a little beauty. I am sure she has you two wrapped around her little paw. It will be fun to read updates about her growing up. I have never seen a poodle marked as she is. Beautiful.

    1. We share the work with mu sister,Lisa as Ruby spends time with her too. The colouring attracted us as she looks different to Tivvy who was black and we didn't want her to be the same.

    1. It’s also made socialising her impossible, Debs but fortunately she was introduced to lots of dogs by the breeder who owned 12 poodles - some standards. There was lots of rough and tumble so hopefully that will help. At least you’re missing the puppy pandemonium too - the 😳Hyde side 😳

  10. Oh, what a beauty! How lovely to meet her. Puppies are exhausting, I remember being worn out looking after Sam and Annie as pups, it's a shock to the system after having older, sedate dogs!xxx
