The broccoli snatcher!

Jan one of our plot neighbours was mystified as to where his broccoli heads were disappearing to. Each time he went to pick some for dinner he found that the tasty bit had been snapped off and just the flower stalks remained.
Then as we were having a chat this happened.
Just in case you missed the action - here's the culprit caught in the act again.

It seems Jan's dog, Max has developed a partiality for broccoli and we watched him walk along the row selecting the choicest morsels and then sneaking away!

PS - I should have posted a deadline for the draw to win The Allotment Planner so if you are interested it is midnight on Saturday 23 November

If you missed out in Jo or Mark's draw here's a chance to try again - it may be a case of third time lucky for someone.

  1. We have a naughty love bird that gets up to all sorts of mischief around the house but what a cheeky dog! But one who has a good appreciation of a healthy meal!
Without catching him in the act NOBODY would guess.

  2. He's very discerning Roger. Our part time dog doesn't bat an eyelid when we are eating cakes and biscuits but sit eating an apple or a pear and she is all attention and hope!

  4. I shall be VERY upset if my local fox population develop a taste for broccoli. Fortunately my neighbour's dog (a terrier of some sort) is too short to do much damage to a tall broccoli plant!

    1. I know foxes pick fruit, mark but maybe they haven;t cottoned on to broccoli yet. I'm curious as to how Max decided he liked broccoli

  5. I have no dog, so my veggies grow well. I sometimes buy broccoli because it's too expensive.

    2. We've just discovered a farmer up the road 'lost' several cows on the same day as our visitor, I think it must have been. Not as cute as Max!

  11. It seems that dogs are like humans, they can like all sorts of things. We had one who liked currants and one who liked strawberries. Madge, the one who liked currants, would lie on her back and slowly eat all the low hanging ones.

    1. Madge would have enjoyed ancient Rome then Alain. Laying on her back and being fed grapes.

  12. Ha ha! Loved the video- cheeky little fellow. As you know we have had lots of theft at our allotments- but I'm sure one or two are animal based not least because I saw a crow flying off (very unsteadily) with a full sized sweetcorn cob!

    1. When we were in the Dales the other day, Jill we saw a rook in flight with something chunky in its mouth but it was silhouetted against the sky and so we couldn't make out what it was.

  13. Ha ha, that's so funny. Max looks like he's deciding what he fancies for lunch in the video, then waits for an opportune moment to go for it, so funny. Archie's been knows to pinch green tomatoes off the plants, I have to watch him now that I'm growing them outdoors.

    1. We first spotted him making his way along the row at the front, Jo so I went and got the camera and we pretended not to be watching him! All shoots in reach of the paths were bitten off!

  14. Hahahahaha.....this really made me laugh! I love how he checks out that's nobody is watching then dashes off....he KNOWS he shouldn't be doing it. My dogs steal the strawberries and go after the low plums and pears.xxxx

    1. As long as he steals only from his own plot, Bilbo as he does regularly come to say hello to us. Having said that if our broccoli grew enough to worry about it being snatched would be progress.
