Learning is at times so difficult

Yesterday we watched this young goldfinch trying its best to use our pond as a bird bath. We have three normal bird baths in the garden but this young bird had big ideas.

The photos aren't brilliant as they were taken from some distance and the bird was constantly on the move but it will give you some idea of the antics. The bird was persistent and gave us a few anxious moments. We were ready to step in with a net to carry out a rescue but fortunately this wasn't needed.

Not sure how this happened but if you click on the album to enlarge the photos, it first shows a very jumpy animation created by all the photos changing quickly. I didn't do anything to make it do this - it just decided itself. Don't you just hate it when machines take over? Just click on a forward arrow to move away from the 'animation'!

  1. He's obviously got ideas above his station. We've had young goldfinches in the garden too, they're regular visitors these days.

    1. I think he/she has left mum and dad's protection, Julie and has ventured out into the big world on his/her own.

    1. I wonder if someone waited with a net when he first jumped into the water, Chel?

  4. Great shots Sue maybe he didn't want a bath at all and it was just the duckweed that fooled him into thinking it was grass.

    1. We once had a dog that did that Elaine, before we built a wall around it. She just stepped out onto the weed then doggy paddled across to be scooped out and didn't have even a tiny bit of weed attached unlike this little one!

  5. Lovely photos Ann, am glad no rescue was needed. I especially love the photo with it's wings spread.

    1. Who's this Ann person? :) Martyn said I kept making squeaking noises. When it landed on the water it spread its wings flat and I was worried that it wouldn't be able to get back out.

    2. I am so sorry Sue...I think I have probably called you Ann more than once too. If I stayed on top of things more and wasn't trying to read so much at once and tend to the dinner and kids too maybe i wouldn't make these mistakes!!

Lol at the squeaking noises...I probably would have been the same though.

    1. Fortunately no net was needed, Snowbird but the young birds are funny when they are trying to learn how to take a bath. They often get the bit about flicking wings before they realise that they need to be in water.
