Lewisia and a friend

You may remember that a while ago we visited a local garden centre and came away with some plants to supplement the planting in our pebble garden.

Martyn chose a couple of plants that we couldn't really plant in this area as they have more specific requirements. The delosperma isn't fully hardy and so will need to be given the protection of our greenhouse in winter and so this was planted in its own terracotta pot.
Then there was the lonely lewisia which needs to be planted so that water doesn't gather in the rosette. We found a broken terracotta container that would sit on its side and provide perfect conditions but when planted in it the lewisia looked very lonely so - you've guessed it - we headed back to the garden centre to buy some friends. The problem was that they had sold out but we did find some garden mint which Martyn posted about here.

We moved on to another garden centre where we found three lovely lewisias - we really only needed two.
Back at home two were planted alongside the earlier purchase and the third was planted in another terracotta pot that has been tipped at an angle.
These have been arranged at the edge of the pebble garden where they should get plenty of sun - when it manages to shine of course.
As the photos above show, if the sun doesn't shine the delosperma sulks and keeps its petal tightly shut!
And did we buy anything else? - You'll have to wait and see.

  2. Of course you bought something else, we gardeners are hopeless at leaving a garden centre only having made a couple of purchases. The pots look fabulous on their sides like that, such a lovely display.
