A Second Coming

Our first planting of broad beans had finished and so I decided to cut down the tops.
Whilst cutting away the spent tops I noticed that new shoots were sprouting at the base of many of the plants.
What's more the shoots were flowering.
I left these and also watered them. I wonder whether they will produce more beans?

  1. Some plants just don't give up! The urge to reproduce is strong...

  2. This will be interesting to follow. Not wanting to put a dampener, but if they fruit that close to the ground, won't they be more of a target for slugs and snails?

    1. We grew some dwarf broad beans that started to flower when they were no taller than these, Deborah and the slugs weren't a problem. They have been selective diners, devastating some plants and leaving others untouched.

  3. Well, what a coincidence...I noticed the same thing on my broad bean plants - they have new growth and are producing more flowers. As I don't have plans for the bed this fall, I also decided to leave them to see what would happen.

  4. As I cut many veg back to the ground rather than yanking them out I have had experience with broad beans trying again too. I get the odd bean but nothing like a serving!

    1. If we do get the odd bean, Roger, I am sure we can find it some companions for the dinner plate.

  5. Oh, I wish you luck with this. I'm trying this for the first year as well. Should be interesting to see if it works.
I know I tried it with Sugar Snap peas and they are coming back as well.
Might be the "easy" way to get a second crop in. Summer is a wonky time to try and get seeds to germinate--always too hot or too dry.
Wishing us BOTH lots of luck! I'll be watching for an update on these.
    Have a good weekend
