Tree Following - The medlar

The medlar still has some flower buds tightly closed and who can blame them with the weather as it is.
It doesn't go in for a spectacular show  preferring to release the flowers into the world over an extended period rather than all at once.
The medlar is self fertile and can even set fruit without the flower being pollinated

The white, five petalled flowers gradually unfurl.

The leaves still have a fine reddish margin but this isn't as noticeable as the leaves mature but if you look carefully at the photo on the left above you can pick it out.

I don't know whether this is usual or something caused by the cool windy weather conditions that we seem unable to shake off it some pest damage but the mature leaves curl upwards like a spoon.
I can't find any sign of pests so I'll keep an eye on this and see whether it changes if the weather actually ever improves.

The leaves on the soft new growth if anything curl slightly in the opposite direction.

To keep the tree under control any upward pointing shoots will be trimmed back along with any the are spreading out too far sideways.

  2. I think it's quite sensible blooming over a prolonged period, especially given the weather at the moment, the wind would probably blow the flowers off.

  3. I had never heard of medlar fruit & had to look it up. How interesting that when it is ripe it actually looks as if it has spoiled.

  4. It's a lovely tree, the flowers are most exotic looking. The foliage looks nice and healthy, despite the curling. Hopefully it's nothing to worry about.

  5. Such attractive flowers Sue and how considerate of your medlar not to open all of its flowers at the same time. Let's hope these cool winds are soon blow out and that our gardens get some calm sunny days.
