Should it be wider?

I'm considering widening my blog page which at the moment is 1000px wide.

I view mainly on a wide screen monitor and end up with quite a lot of background. (My template doesn't autosize to fit the screen although I can zoom the view to do this manually).

I am aware though that some of you may view in a tablet ...
... or an iPhone. If you do view using an iPhone you may view using an Internet browser  or use an App which ignores the sidebar completely.
So with so many different options, we poor Bloggers can never be sure how our changes impact everyone. With this in mind I would really appreciate some feedback.

The options are :
  1. To leave things as they are.
  2. Widen the page to 1200px which I have done for The School Vegetable Patch blog just so you can take a peep and see what you think.
  3. Widen the page slightly so that I leave a little bit of space between the main content and the sidebar. You can compare recent posts on my test blog here on my test page
I'm hoping the mini poll widget below works who knows what happens where technology is concerned!

To vote click in the radio button to make your choice and then click on the word vote at the bottom of the poll.

  1. I've noticed that the voting so far is evenly spread so if the vote is for a particular reason rather than just a preference can you comment and explain.

  2. I've voted for leave as it is, purely because viewing on my laptop it looks nicely spaced.

  3. As above, I tend to view on my laptop and find it just right as it is Sue.
When I read blogs on my phone, I accept that the sidebars are usually missing unless I change the settings.

  4. Option 2 is what I have it zoomed up to anyway so it's readable for me.

    1. If you zoom it to make it readable tpals will making it wider cause a problem as you would still need to zoom up to make the text larger,

  5. I usually access it on my laptop but I don't have as much margin as you show on your photo Sue. Slightly wider would be great, but it is great just as it is!
BTW it is a very useful voting widget!!

  6. I've voted to leave it as it is, but I only view on my laptop.

  7. I would vote for Option 3, it seems to improve the spacing without making it overly wide.

  8. I'm easy really, but I voted "Leave things as they are" because it's all lovely as it is. I read on a laptop, so I'm sure whatever you decide will work fine here.

  9. Doesn't bother me, I have it zoomed anyway, & can change it for myself. I suppose without seeing it on other types of hardware I wouldn't know if it was better one way or another

  10. Hi, I voted no. 2 as until I got used to it I found the page overly busy and a little difficult to find my way around! But there is no need to change things for someone like me who is maybe not as IT literate as your other readers:)

  11. I voted for option three. it doesn't make much difference to the overall width but gives it a cleaner feel overall. I'm normally viewing on a smallish monitor.

  12. I only view on a laptop and I like the way it currently fits my screen. My eyesight could be better but the size of font and width of what I am reading means I do not have to make any adjustments. I looked at your other blog {of which I love the header design, btw} and it isn't as easier for me to follow the longer lines, but that is my eyesight. Sorry I'm late replying to this, changed my security and boy, am I regretting it!

  13. Thanks everyone for the feedback - most who expressed a view said that the blog should stay as ism so I decided increasing the width substantially was out. Based on some of the comments above I have tweaked the width by 20px just to put a little space between the content and sidebar.. Hopefully this won;y cause a problem to thise who preferred the width as it was - let me know if it does,

  14. Using fixed pixel based widths on website objects is increasingly problematic in this world of myriad different devices. You could experiment with ems, instead of pixels, which are a relative unit, but really you are straying into the territory of media queries and responsive design. The idea is you size type and content blocks, and even arrange them, based on the size of screen. A half way house might be to try using percentages, so that e.g. the main content was 70% and sidebar 30% and then add e.g. 10px padding to the sidebar. Good luck! But you have a loyal readership anyway, so I wouldn't worry overly.

    1. The blog seems to resize for iPads and iphones Janet, What i was more concerned about was the readability of the text when scaled down, I think that I have settled on this now. I am a bit restricted as I started with a Blogger template and have gradually have edited it so I have ended up with my own style.

I am getting quite a lot of spam. It is not published and is just deleted. I have stopped sifting through it and just delete any that ends up in my spam folder in one go so I am sorry if one of your messages is deleted accidentally.
