That's a place I'd love to visit. I expect you came away inspired.
ReplyDeleteIt's our second visit, Jo. We first went a few years ago and we bought some of our perennials there at that time.
DeleteI would love to visit it too. I was a huge fan of Mr Hamilton. Gorgeous photos!
ReplyDeleteIt is well worth a visit, Sarah.
DeleteI still remember bits of it, after all this time.
ReplyDeleteHe certainly made a lasting impression didn't he, Jessica?
DeleteIt all looks so neat. Geoff was a very organized man.
ReplyDeleteHis son, Nick, now keeps it going, Mark
DeleteI know somebody like that Mark
ReplyDeleteI see Geoff wasn`t a fan of raised beds or the no dig method
I don't think raised beds were really used back in Geoff's day, David.
DeleteI have to say that, although I can remember our Percy, Geoff will always be one of the best.
ReplyDeleteHe certainly was, Rick. It was very sad when he died. Such a loss.
DeleteI have never seen any of Geoff Hamilton's shows, but he obviously had a huge impact on gardening in the UK. There were several gardening shows I used to watch back in the 90's and they were far more informative than a lot of the fluff on tv now. In fact, I still have some on VHS that I plan to convert to digital. I should see if some of Geoff's shows are on You Tube.
ReplyDeleteGeoff inspired many British gardeners, Margaret. In the tearoom they have small television screen showing Geoff giving advice on gardening. It is just as relevant today as it was in his day.
DeleteSo much nicer than blimmin Longmeadow...!
ReplyDeleteIt is a beautiful garden, gnman
DeleteSuch a wonderful garden with a beautiful medley of colours. Looks like you had perfect weather for your visit too.xx
ReplyDeleteIt was a beautiful day, Tanya
DeleteWhat a marvelous garden, I loved the veggies. I really must try and visit one day!xxx
ReplyDeleteWe have just put lots more photographs up on the Internet in how are Zenfolio album, Dina if you are interested there is a link on the side bar.
DeleteHere in Canada we used to get his programs on public television. They were fantastic.
ReplyDeleteHe was a very common sense gardener, Anne Do you still get Gardeners' World in Canada?
DeleteHi Sue, we never did get gardeners world here, but we did get the cottage gardens and paradise gardens by Geoff Hamilton. I liked them so much that I ordered the dvd from the UK and can watch it on my computer. I now watch g.w on YouTube whenever I can. Gardening is different here of course, but the programs are still really useful!
DeleteAh lovely. I just realised we went there almost exactly 10 years ago when we met up with Jan's family in Rutland for her dad's 60th. He's going to be 70 soon. It was before I had the allotment too so I bet I'd spot more things if we went again.
ReplyDeleteI've just added a link to the album where we have posted lots more photographs of our Barnsdale visit, Lou. The link is on today's post today being Wednesday.
DeleteThanks sue, great pics
DeleteGoodness, I recognise the style of that pond edge, I used the photos from his book when I built the pond in my previous garden! Such an iconic garden, magnificent veg patch. It could all feel slightly dated now, but I don't think such great combinations of plants - particularly in autumn finery - could ever go out of fashion. Mind you, they probably said that about heather gardens...
ReplyDeleteIt certainly didn't feel outdated, Janet. I think maybe heather gardens are coming back into fashion. Personally I just garden how I like regardless of any fashions of the time
