      There was only this one, Debbie. Hope more follow! This is the species of butterfly often sold in kits to rear at home - I wonder if this has any affect on numbers as it's really a summer migrant.

    We have had a couple over the last week, don't know about you but we have loads of butterflies this year it's like walking through a butterfly farm some mornings, absolutely lovely

      We've had clouds of peacocks and the various whites, Flowerlady - we've also had a few gatekeepers - others species have been in short supply but generally on the whole more butterflies than usual.

    Oh my.....such a beautiful butterfly. It's been a great year for them hasn't it, although they all came at once rather late. I think the sun has brought them out.xxxx

      It certainly has been a good butterfly year but more some species than other - we seem to be short of tortoiseshells and I haven't seen a red admiral yet.

    What a beauty! The butterflies this year have excelled themselves. They are everywhere and so many types. I am now taking an interest in the moths that replace the flutter of wings at night time. xx

      Not all moths are night creatures Chel - lots are about during the day and are sometimes mistaken for butterflies as a result.

      Moth can be distinguished from butterflies as they don't have a bobble on the end of their antennae and also at rest they fold their wings flat over their body rather than holding them upright. There are other differences but these are the easiest ones to look for.
