When we were at the plot yesterday I took a few photos that I thought I'd share. Some show how dry the soil still is.
Concern shifts from wet to cold

Throughout April our concern has been the lack of anything resembling a dry

Your plot looks great even if the soil is dry. Boy, this has been one crazy year weather wise for all of us!
ReplyDeleteIt's all looking very neat and tidy, and it looks like you've got lots of things planted out now. I've still got loads here waiting to go out.
ReplyDeleteYour allotment is so big. You really like dahlias to save a patch for them. Can't wait to see them bloom.
ReplyDeleteWow what an amazing job you've done on such a big plot. Really like the grass between the beds instead of paving or bark. How long have you had this plot?
ReplyDeleteIt certainly has been crazy Robin, really muggy today and has been raining again a little this evening.
ReplyDeleteStill lots to plant Jo and there are tatty bits I didn't photograph - funny how the weeds don't show up in general shots!
I just hope the dahlias do bloom this year Diana as they are growing really slowly. I want to see the flowers too as I have no idea what colours they will be!
We took on the first plot in the 1980's Debbie. Then we gradually took on extra area as the site was just an overgrown derelict mess. The council were thinking of applying to change the status of the land so those of us with plots just took on extra ones to make sure the site remained an allotment site!
I didn't realise your plot was so big! Compared with mine it's vast. Actually, despite the drought, many of your plants are looking surprisingly lush. And what would we do without bricks? I have nets and fleece and mesh weighted-down with bricks, just like you.
ReplyDeleteYour plot is huge, and it looks great!
ReplyDeleteWell done!
Martin :)
Your allotment is so huge! Very well kept even though in dry state!
ReplyDeleteYes bricks are very useful aren't they mark - I think the grass paths and bushes make the plot look lush.
ReplyDeleteJust have to sort out the bits hiding out of camera shot M&A
We have had a bit of rain now Malar so hope it will get things going a bit quicker.
It looks fab! Everything's so neat and tidy :-) Love 'n' hugs, Mel xx
ReplyDeleteFor the first time I just found some big tubers from my dead dahlia plant. Do I just lift them and keep them in paperbag. They getting darker colour.
ReplyDeleteThanks Mel but I have missed out the untidy bits.
ReplyDeleteAre the tubers firm Diana?
They look firm. The earliest planting will be in September for the dahlias depending very much on the weather.
ReplyDeleteThe recommended way to store dahlia tubers is to rinse off all the soil and then leave the tubers to dry by placing them upside down. This way wetness doesn't drip down into the hollow stems.
ReplyDeleteThen pack the tubers in dry compost and leave them somewhere that is frost free but not warm or they could start to try and grow.
You plot is a real inspiration Sue. Though I'd hate to have to keep all those grass paths smart!
ReplyDeleteThe grass paths are mainly Martyn's domain, Janet. Battery operated lawn mower and strimmer for the edges or longer grass, although I do a bit of edging around beds that have net or enviromesh that would rip with the strimmer. We not only like the look of the grass but it's great for friendly bugs, frogs and toads and it's nice to sit on when weeding too!
ReplyDeleteThe much isn't really expensive Janet. The size we bought cost just over £13 with postage and we probably used about half so if it works it will be worth it. Most mulches would have to be renewed every year unless we just used weed suppressant fabric which is three times more expensive. We wanted something that would leave the ground bare for the time when the plants aren't fruiting so we can weed and feed.
ReplyDeleteYour allotment plots all look so neat and tidy...I wish everyone on our plot were so respectful of what they have...or were you just choosy on which plots you photoed??
ReplyDeleteI love hoe you have put the photos up....could you let me know how you have done it?
Not so choosy Tanya. We have a couple of beds that need clearing and a stack of 'stuff' like canes etc that look a bit untidy but we seem to be getting on top of things.
ReplyDeleteThe photos are a Picasa web album. Picasa comes free with your Blogger account. I'll email you some instructions
