I don'tthink what you came across is likely to be a root. I came to a hard core when I was working on mine. I had to chisel a large enough hollow to plant into, The main problem is remembering to water the planted fern. I forgot and the fern died. I really need to replant itSue Garretthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08164518448098182276noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33294007.post-90600501284047694132023-07-15T22:19:58.634+00:002023-07-15T22:19:58.634+00:00Im so grateful to you for this. We treated it in the usual way, straw in the crown and several layers of fleece but sadly there are no new shoots this year. I mentioned it at my garden centre this morning and they suggested exactly what you have done. I was over the moon. What a smashing idea ! So I set to with my tools scooping out. It felt a bit masochistic. There’s was an amazing amount of red fur and then I came across what appeared to be thick hard white root and now I’m not sure if perhaps it’s not dead after all? I wonder if I’ve just butchered any chance of new growth? Any advice gratefully received.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33294007.post-44401739316506795882022-04-22T10:24:51.215+00:002022-04-22T10:24:51.215+00:00Hi Paul, sorry it’s taken so long to reply.

It’s not particularly spectacular because I just chose a fern that had self seeded somewhere in the garden as I didn’t know whether it would work or not.

The hardest part was actually scoping out the hollow as the inside of the tree fern is very hard.

Another point is you need to remember to water it. Hope it works for you good luckSue Garretthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08164518448098182276noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33294007.post-90421401026862747912022-04-13T16:23:19.228+00:002022-04-13T16:23:19.228+00:00Hi Sue,

Eventually one has sprouted new fronds, but the other 2 appear to be dead. Their stems are beautiful and I'm thinking of scooping out their crowns and planting tree ferns in them, to fake it! I have some heavy duty tools to help me. Just wondering whether yours worked out long-term or not?
Best wishes,
Paulpaulhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06952817505924034688noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33294007.post-22029917787345466872012-06-30T16:28:56.666+00:002012-06-30T16:28:56.666+00:00I suppose the test of whether it was a good idea o...I suppose the test of whether it was a good idea or not will depend on whether it works out in the end Jo.Sue Garretthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08164518448098182276noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33294007.post-54257919577346412142012-06-30T16:28:10.098+00:002012-06-30T16:28:10.098+00:00Just hope it lasts Tanya and the top fern grows in...Just hope it lasts Tanya and the top fern grows in proportion so it looks right.Sue Garretthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08164518448098182276noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33294007.post-58218919318476019272012-06-30T16:27:27.212+00:002012-06-30T16:27:27.212+00:00It always seemed very damp in the centre as I was ...It always seemed very damp in the centre as I was working on hollowing it out, Mark so I'm hoping that it holds moisture.Sue Garretthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08164518448098182276noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33294007.post-82315960896400074912012-06-30T16:26:12.510+00:002012-06-30T16:26:12.510+00:00We were gutted when it didn't shoot Liz.
