I may lie low for a while

I don't usually post about personal problems but this post is an exception.

For the next few weeks you may notice that online presence fluctuates quite a lot. I may post less regularly - maybe not at all - on my own blog and not be able to comment on the blogs that I visit.

Something that you don't know about me is that I have very poor eyesight. I am exceptionally shortsighted. Without  glasses or contact lenses my world looks like this.

I was prescribed glasses at primary school after somehow managing to cheat my way through early eye tests for several years. I hid my poor eyesight well and developed effective strategies for concealing the problem. I just did not want to wear glasses.

Then in my late teens I started to wear contact lenses which I have used since and which gave me natural vision.

Recently after a while the lenses have been uncomfortable as my eyes have become dry meaning that I can't wear my lenses 'full time'

The glasses that I have as back-up are very thick lenses and really don't give a very good vision as well as being very heavy to wear.
I explored possible alternatives and am now being assessed for possible corrective surgery.

As a first step I have to wear glasses full time so they can diagnose an accurate prescription. This means that I have some difficulty reading and using the computer.

I don't know how long it will take to make the decision about whether surgery will go ahead and in the event that it does, how long it will be before I am allowed back at the computer. I am trying to schedule one or two posts just to keep you interested so you don't dessert me.

If I suddenly go quiet you will know why and I hope you will hang about until normal blogging is resumed.

  1. Sorry to hear this Sue, and you will be missed, but putting you first is more important. My eyes are bad enough, and I must wear glasses to see, but they are nothing as bad as yours, although my glasses are nearly like those. I hope you get your decisions made soon and can return to this virtual corner of the world soon! xoxo

  8. Oh my, I'm so sorry to hear here about your vision, Sue. I've known several people that have had successful corrective surgery - it's truly amazing the advances that have been made in the past 10 years or so. Wishing you the best of luck in the coming weeks & fingers crossed that the end result is a positive one. And there is no possibility of desertion from my end :)

    1. Thank you for your really supportive comments they are much appreciated. Sorry not to respond individually. I am having to rely on speech recognition at the moment so some rather strange to typos may get through.

The problem is that having worn contact lenses for so many years they change the shape of your eye and so I have had to wear glasses so that the eye shape can revert to its normal shape. This means that the glasses that I am wearing become less and less suitable for me as the prescription of my eyes changes. It is for this reason that I have had to wear glasses for so long so that my prescription could be stabilised.

At my last appointment the ophthalmologist was satisfied that my eyesight had settled down and I could proceed to the next stage. This means a visit to a specialist clinic in Manchester on Friday where my eyes will be scanned, assessed for general health and various measurements taken.

At this point where things might actually come to an end if they decide I am not suitable for the treatment or something he treatment would be unsafe.

Many you have mentioned Laser surgery but unfortunately this option isn't open to me as I am too shortsighted. The surgery if it happens will be to replace my natural lenses with artificial ones. Fingers still crossed.

At the moment Martyn has drawn the short straw as he is my reader, my chauffeur and my guide dog.

  24. Hi there, I am sure none of your readers will desert you, even if we all have to withdraw for a while to attend to personal/family things! I had major eye surgery two years ago and although I was scared all the medics were wonderful. As other contributors have mentioned eye surgery has increased by leaps and bounds over the last ten years and is now absolutely stunning and remarkable. In my case I could not lean over for some months which put paid to many hobbies and especially gardening but even if you have to do something similar at least it is the fallow season. Good luck, I am sure all will go well, and it will be transformative if they decide to go ahead. We'll look forward to hearing all about it when you come back:)
