    1. They are lovely little birds, Jo. They form a queue waiting fir a turn on the feeder but those already there are often reluctant to relinquish their position

  2. Seeing those birds feeding I am worried that I have been sold a pup. I recently bought a sunflower seed feeder but it doesn't have any of the openings or perches at the bottom only the wire mesh cylinder. It has only just gone out so I will be keeping a close eye on how quickly (or not) it goes down. Previously I nearly threw out a niger seed feeder because it appeared to be impenetrable. Before I did give up on it a family of goldfinches arrived in the area and the feeder started to go down. They are the only ones that have got the knack. The sunflower feeder was meant to be an extension of the encouragement but I am having serious doubts about the design!

    1. The feeder holds sunflower hearts, Mal. The wire mesh is on the outside but inside is a glass tube. When we put out niger seeds were use a similar feeder as those designed fir niger seeds don't seem to work. I think whole sunflower seeds are a bit tough for goldfinches to cope with,

    2. Thanks for these observations,Sue. The new one I have doesn't have a glass tube - or portals. It was sold as a sunflower heart feeder and I am using it for the intended purpose. Will re-evaluate before the month is out.

  3. Great photos.

I remember we got so excited, about 30 years ago, when we had a small flock of Goldfinches that came to the same spot in the garden at the same time every afternoon. Now they are flying about the place all day long.

  6. Always delightful to watch. We have a few new feeders to add but have not yet installed the poles for them. A task for next spring as with our rocky soil, it's a half day job.

    1. Our feeders are either hanging from a tree of from a pole on a stand, Margaret so no need to dig holes.
