Are we going to be lucky?

Do you remember back at the beginning of March our apricot tree was in full flower and I was worried about the lack of pollinators?
I was concerned that this was too early and that pollination was unlikely. I tried to help out a little with a paintbrush but nothing beats a nice hairy bee when it comes to pollination.

Since the blossom dropped I have been keeping a watchful eye on the tree - scouring the branches for any sign that we may have just a little fruit.

Yesterday I spotted a few of these - nothing comparable to the amount of blossom.
Tiny little fruitlets. There were not many so we are not set up for a glut or even going to have to consider thinning but any fruit at all will be considered a triumph.

Will the little fruits go on to develop? I hope so but nothing is certain.

  1. Well, I know the feeling. It reminds me of the plum tree I had. In its entire life I think it produced just 3 plums. The blossom on my apple and pear trees is just beginning to open, which seems about the right time. I was very careful with the pruning this time, so I hope it pays off, but we are very much at the mercy of the weather.

  2. Fingers crossed, it's looking good so far. The blossom's starting to drop on my peach tree now so I'll be watching for signs of fruit too.

  3. You remind me to my star fruit tree. Full of flower, but no fruitlet remain. I think the down pour make it worse.

  4. Your trees must have blossomed really early. In my neck of the woods they are only just starting....and for the first time since I bought it I have blossom on my apricot tree too. Fingers crossed for both of us!

  5. That's good to hear, I have two and the first has no fruits at all, or maybe one which is hanging on for grim death, hoping my little peach tree does better. xxx

  6. Wonderful. The tree can put most of it's energy into growing bigger and stronger this year, with just a taste of the things to come. Gardening is for the patient!

    1. We don't want it to be any bigger CJ as it is growing in a pot and is already big enough - stronger is fine.:)

  8. If my apricot does not set fruit this favourable Spring I think it never will. Have you ever tried threatening a plant Sue?
The bumblebees seem to prefer my more sheltered flowers and one today seemed very happy in my greenhouse!

    1. I regularly threaten plants Roger. It is fairly sheltered where it is but it did flower very early.
