A dreadful start to the week!

Monday we were involved in a nasty accident with a runaway horse drawn tram that we had just boarded at Middleton Railways Festival of Transport. Reports about the incident in newspapers proved to me that you just must not believe everything they write in newspapers. Some reports were just so far from the truth it was hard to believe it was the same incident.
Comments made by people reading the online versions were often really cruel and ill-informed. People also actually took photographs of emergency services working to rescue the groom who had been trapped under the tram during the incident. One newspaper even contacted Martyn to ask if he had a video. We had both camera and video camera to hand but wouldn't have dreamed of filming! I'm not going to describe the incident Martyn has already done so on his blog if you want to learn more about what actually happened rather than cobbled together versions cropping up all over the internet.

Tuesday a morning call from a plot neighbour informed us that someone had broken into our shed. Again Martyn has posted about this here. Strangely the window had been carefully removed and put safely to one side so it wasn't too bad a job to reinstall it. We don't keep anything of value on the plot, as could be easily seen had the would-be thieves had a good look through the window, so nothing was missing but it did spur us on to a good clear out and shed cleaning and tidying session.
We only lock the shed to stop it becoming a venue for unseemly activities!

  1. Well they say these things come in threes so I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that they've got it wrong. The incident at Middleton Railway sounds dreadful, though as bad as it was, it could have been worse I suppose. What a coincidence, we walked through Middleton Park yesterday to the railway, I'm hoping to do a post about it on my other blog soon. Sorry to hear about the break in, glad it wasn't any worse. I hate to think of people invading my personal space, it gives me the creeps, so even if they don't take anything, a break in is still horrible.

    1. Jo, maybe the third was our neighbour trying to hit and run Martyn yesterday!

  2. How strange about the shed break-in. A tidy thief, no less! I wonder what they were looking for? Maybe they just wanted somewhere to sleep (and make a cup of tea?).

    1. Nope, they had rummaged about Mark and not left the inside tidy. If they wanted to make a drink they would have been unlucky as we transport everything in a cool bag and the stove too. Stoves at oone time were common targets for theft.

  3. Sometimes the world is such a disappointing place. You can't believe what you read or hear from the media and you can't leave anything unless it is bolted, locked and alarmed. I hope that's the end of it for you and at least you didn't have to replace the glass. Take care. xx

    1. It is disappointing Chel. I was appalled when people who didn't really know the story were posting comments criticising the woman who was hurt.

  5. so glad the thieves didn't take anything! And the window ... how strange. Did you watch the programme about allotments on BBC? One woman had a regular visitor who broke into her shed who made tea (and I seem to remember tidied up afterwards!!!!)

    1. I saw that the last time it was aired, Elablue and thought it was funny how the women sat at the shed all night waiting to see who turned up. They were making such a noise that they would have scared off anyone around. One of our plot neighbours is considering a stake out but not us!

  6. A nasty accident, sorry it happened. I'm glad your shed break in wasn't worse. There have been some at my allotment site too, as well as some mindless vandalism of a world class plot (not mine!) I am so impressed with the inside of your shed - it's wonderful!

    1. At least the break-in spurred me to undertake some tidying that I have needed to do for ages, CJ. The shed is more a shelter for coffee breaks (we can seat four people comfortably so we can entertain too) and we store just odds and ends like plant food and netting.

    1. I certainly could, Snowbird - I think that's the most scary thing about it. What could have happened.
