Gardens worth a visit?

When we go on holiday or have a day out, like many gardeners, we enjoy visiting other gardens. Reading blogs I often spot reviews of gardens that people have visited. It's a really good way of finding new places to explore.

I haven't tended to devote blog posts to any of the gardens that we have visited but I do have a section on my website here, where I have shared photos of some of the gardens that we have enjoyed visiting.
Whilst the weather outside is miserable you may like to browse the photos and perhaps choose somewhere to visit this year.

I'd love some suggestions of gardens that you have enjoyed visiting (especially near enough to Yorkshire to visit on a day out) so that I too can dream of next year's days out!

  1. I'm not a big garden visitor - Leics. is not the best county for this - but we have visited one or two in Northamptonshire especially Coton Manor, which is lovely, quite small but with plenty of ideas that will easily translate in your own garden.

    1. I do prefer the smaller ones - so far I think Hidcote was my favourite.

  2. My favorite garden to visit has been your 'front gardens' Love the variety you used and the flowing design! Cheers, Jenni

  3. I also prefer smaller gardens, I get a bit 'brain blown' with huge ones. Much as I like Harlow Carr I find it difficult to see how I could put some of their ideas into practice in a domestic garden.

NGS Open Gardens are my absolute favourite. The new Yellow Book should be out soon ....

    2. Sue, if you go to http://www.ngs.org.uk/ there is a "Garden Search" box top right. 90% are private gardens and generally the openings are April thru' September but there will be the odd one opening in Spring to display daffs, for example.

All proceeds to charity, usually tea and home-made cake, and often plant sales as well.

  4. Sue, I know this is a long way from Yorkshire, but if you ever get a chance to visit Hergest Croft in Herefordshire, I can hardly recommend it too highly. I wrote about it here:-

    1. There's always holidays Mark as we are trying to visit lots of areas of the UK having previously spent lots of time in Europe and realising we hadn't explored our own shores.

  5. I dream about visiting Alnwick Poison Garden. I was always impressed by poisonous plants' abilities to kill or to harm and by how people used them in the past.
I always wanted to have my own big poisonous garden but since I'm pregnant I've been thinking about kids' future safety in the garden so I'm not so convinced of having such big collection of poisonous plants.

  6. Hi Sue...well I have just caught up with all of your posts..I have to say the break in the middle of the seed posts to see the blackbirds was very welcome as I was feeling terribly dis-organized half way through your January posts...In fact I think from reading your posts I could go and write a whole post on my current inadequacies of a gardener right now...lol. Also I was reminded that not everything is drab and dreary out there with those splashes of colour which kept popping up every now and then. Certainly has got me in the right frame of mind to get my butt down the allotment!!

    1. We need to fit in an allotment visit to gather more vegetables but are unlikely to do much gardening as it's now even soggier

  7. Hi Sue, I don't often get out to other gardens nowadays, but I am hoping to get to one or two yellow book gardens locally, as I think they will be invaluable for giving me ideas for my own gardening. Of course, if you end up in Cornwall, any of the Cornish valley gardens is worth a look, I am a big fan of Trebah. And I love The Garden House in Devon, though I hear it has changed a lot in recent years.

  8. I love visiting gardens and go to Harlow Carr each Month. I just went yesterday actually. I think it is inspiring there even if they seem to have everything perfect and definitely things you can transfer to your own garden (just in my case not as neat!!!) I also enjoy visiting nature reserves too and just joined Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, they have tons of sites and although not garden related they do make a good day out. Thanks for sharing your post and gardens to visit :)

  9. Hi Sue,
I can recommend a couple of gardens in Yorkshire and these are not too far from you and quite small gardens. The first is my favourite York Gate on the outskirts of Leeds. I love it, lots of 'Garden rooms' like Hidcote. Beautiful in the spring, quite small but packs a lot in. Then there is Dove Cottage Nursery in Halifax which has a garden attached showcasing all its lovely plants. Also Scampston Hall, though that is further up in North Yorkshire. Let me know what you think if you try them.

    1. I will Annie, thanks. I've heard of York Gate but for some reason never tried it - always the same isn't it with places on the doorstep?
