Learning to crochet?

I wonder if these webs photographed on a neighbour's fence show that even a spider has to learn. Starting with this:

And practising until it can achieve this:

  1. They are very pretty when frosted. I have a few fine examples in the front garden on a tree.

  2. The frost really shows all the webs up, there's loads in my garden.

  3. Really festive webbing! It looks like glass that could shatter. Speaking of crochet... I'm hoping to start knitting this Winter (not sure what the difference is between crochet and knitting).

    1. The web was covered in tiny ice crystals that looked like diamonds but the camera wouldn't focus on them. Crochet - one hook, knitting 2 needles. Crochet also tends to produce a lacier effect but not always.

    1. Indeed it is, Mal. Again our neighbours must have thought I was potty!

  5. What a bevy of wonderful produce. You are certainly blessed and obviously hard workers. Have you ever grown leeks in the trench method where you gradually add soil to eventually get to ground level by time of harvest. Depending on the depth of the trench, you can grow thick leeks up to 60cm or longer. Give it a try. It's not that hard to do.

    1. No we haven't Patrick - we may have a try but to be honest the ones we grow last us right up until they start to go to seed.

  6. I love the idea of spiders having to learn to create pretty webs - even the starter webs looks beautiful covered in frost.

  7. Again such wonderful photos sue...what sort of camera do you have. I'm sure my ability to create such great photos is down to the camera and not my inadequate use of it!!

  8. The close-ups were taken with a small Panasonic Lumix ZS3. It has a brilliant macro focus setting that my Panasonic Lumix FZ100 doesn't have but that has a great telephoto and wide angle lens. So I use one for macro shots and the other for landscapes or for birds that need telephotoing. I'm not sure whether or not the new small Lumix cameras still have the macro and macro zoom settings as we've had that camera for a while - if they don't it would be a real pity.

We've just invested in a DSLR camera a Nikon D3200 which we can add additional lenses to to widen our scope,
