Out of the starting blocks

Once courgettes start producing the race is on. Will the courgettes crop so fast that we just can't keep up with the supply?

As I mentioned earlier we planted quite a lot of courgettes partly due to feeling very pessimistic about the plants chance of growing and partly due to the usual packet of free seeds that we couldn't resist sowing.

Actually we are glad that we didn't resist sowing the packet of Tondo di Piacenza as it has proved to be quite a find. It has a good flavour (almost cucumbery) when eaten raw in a salad and the round shape made it an ideal candidate for trying out a stuffed courgette recipe.

The recipe for the ham and mushroom stuffed courgettes was based on the one here. I didn't steam the courgettes first as I didn't really see the need to do this. Neither did I dot the parmesan and breadcrumb mixture with butter.

Last year I gathered together lots of recipes for using courgettes some of which can be found here

  1. Oh yum, we are having our courgettes this evening done in the bog standard manner. Fried with garlic, can't wait, first of the season for us.

  3. I am quite pleased with our round ones as well, and also first year. Thanks for the hint that I won't need to steam them. I have tried the patty pans (bigger ones that is) stuffed similarly with a vegetarian chilli topped with nacho cheese...very nice also. Will check out your recipe links. Enjoy!

    1. We don't mind a bit of bite so if you like them soft them steam them Bren. We tend to like vegetables on the 'undercooked' side of things

  4. Not many bloggers have mentioned a glut of courgettes this year, which is abnormal, so you are doing better than most people. My one and only Patty Pan squash was evidently not fertilised, and has rotted off now. I feel there is little chance of getting more this year.

    1. We had some stuffed with minced meat today Janet - recipe is on this page of my website. The round courgettes just lend themselves to stuffing.
