Front garden - an update

Just a few photos to update on the state of the front garden bed.
I've been really pleased with how this has turned out. I chose plants to try and extend the interest for as long as possible rather than to have a complete blast of colour that was short lived and this seems to have worked.
The crocuses (crocii - if you prefer) started to flower in February and since then there has always been something to look at from our the vanatage point of our front window. Looking back I also have flower photos from last November but as we didn't really have any frosts until later maybe this won't be repeated this year.
I did lose one or two plants - as I suspected salvia Amistad wasn't fully hardy and I also lost a couple of veronicas. There were still one or two gaps where yesterday I planted three coreopsis - they have been in the greenhouse trying to grow a little bigger but (like everything else) struggling with this so I decided to plant them out anyway and I'm also going to add more spring bulbs.

If you want to see pictures of how this bed progressed from start to finish I have a page on my website here which may be of interest.

PS: Don't forget to have a go at the sudoku competition

    1. Hi awholeplotoflove - what a long name I may have to abbreviate to awpol. Thanks for signing the epetition and also for becoming my 200th follower - I'm starting to think I've made it to the big time - and for taking the time to post a comment. I've had a quick peek at your blog and will be heading back soon to have a longer browse. It's not raining yet so gardening is on the cards for this afternoon!

  2. A nice pastel palette, Sue - in contrast to most of the brash reds and yellows that most people favour in Summertime.

  3. Hello again Sue :-) I like your border planting a plan – I too am in for the long haul in flowering.

Before I looked at your border story post I thought I spotted the Penstemon. I’ve got Raven but sadly lost Etna to the hard winter 2/3 years ago. As we didn’t have a particularly cold winter here Raven survived but I need to take cuttings this year to make sure I keep it.

That’s quite a variety of Penstemons you have with you. Hardy geraniums I am a fan of too and heucheras I just adore both the dark ones and marmalade – I’ve spread both around my garden ;-)

Here’s hoping the weather is kind to you this week :-)

    1. Hi Shirl - yes there are quite a few penstemons - they came as a collection as did the hardy geraniums. I also have one or two of each around in the back garden. The bees love the penstemons. You can't help but spread heucheras around can you as the split into dozens of plants?

  5. It's filled out really well and is looking nice and mature now. You've done really well to keep some year round interest in the bed, something I think isn't very easy to do.

    1. I guess it's a case of forgoing the spectacular for a more lasting period of interest Jo. I thought as it was at the front onf the house this was important

  6. It certainly has filled out well Sue and with the fence surround hopefully it will get enough shelter from those nasty winds we often get!
