Not the best place to set up home

Karen - one of the plot holders on our site had quite a surprise when harvesting rhubarb.
A blackbird had decided that this was a good place in which to build a nest. Having laid four lovely eggs it obviously had second thoughts and abandoned this clutch.

Not only was this nest built at almost ground level but it was also right alongside the 'road' that runs around our site.

I sould have mentioned it earlier but there is still time to take part in the RSPB Nature Count this weekend. Although in this weather the birds seem to be staying indoors. It must be really difficult rearing chicks this 'spring'.

  1. I have a similar nest (with two eggs) in our log store. Sadly abandoned . . .

    1. I suppose that they could have been first time nest builders and they all have to learn!

  3. I was expecting it to be a robin's nest, I've seen their nests in lots of unusual places. There was one in between the bedding plants in B&Q one year, and I saw another one in pots which were for sale in a garden centre. Neither of those nests had been abandoned either, you'd think they'd be frightened off with so many people about. Such a shame that the eggs have been abandoned, though the chicks probably wouldn't have survived being so close to the ground, lots of predators.

    1. Robins do make nests in the weirdest of places, Jo and somehow make it work for them

  4. I'm glad that the Starlings which nested in the gutter outside my bedroom have cleared off. Noisy things!

    1. I remember when we used to get starlings nesting in the loft space, Mark- certainly they made lots of noise. Then one day we found a young bird on the bathroom floor. Martyn had to get out a ladder and take it back up into the loft.

  6. Birds do pick the most unlikely places to make their nests. Shame the eggs got abandoned.
