Market Research- I've turned off word verification!

Just a very quick question.

Blogger has taken upon itself to change the word verification utility used to filter out non-human commenters. Many have complained about this as the new system is very difficult to read. It may be a coincidence but since all the complaints Blogger has changed this slightly!

It could be another coincidence but since the new system was implemented there have been far less comments on my posts.

We have three options:
  1. Continue to use word verification
  2. Turn it off and just delete any spam comments - this has caused problems in the past as any comments getting past the spam filter have been sent on  to anyone subscribing by email to comments.
  3. Moderating all comments - which means comments don't appear until the blog owner accepts them.
Please add your vote in my poll and add a comment if you wish to say more!
If you have a Blogger account you can also add your view to the Blogger help forum here Maybe just maybe we can make them change back!

In the meantime I'm switching to moderating comments!

If you can't find how to turn it off it could be you are in the new 'improved' interface which I tried and hated! So...

  • Switch to the old interface
  • Go to Settings
  • Click the Comments tab
  • Near the bottom is  Show word verification for comments? Click the No radio button
  • To moderate go to the option above and choose when you want to moderate and type in an email address where moderation notices are to be sent. You can moderate directly from the email without visiting your blog.
Looking at the results of the poll so far it looks as though Captcha is a bad step for Blogger - implementing a code to cut down on spam which no-one wants to use - are they going to force us to use if when they eventually dispose of the old interface?

    1. Thanks Cathy - I'm seeing how it goes by just using moderate

  2. OK..I voted moderate comments as I really hate the word verification. This is how I have done it on my blog because even with word verification on i found that people would still sometimes leave random stuff or try to put links in there comments or even just be down-right rude about things. It's a shame but that's a fact of life I guess. Whatever you decide i will still come by and still keep commenting !!

    1. That is true Tanya - it is obvious from some comments that it is just a way to leave links. I haven't had any rude comments yet so maybe I'm just lucky. You should see my hotmail accounts spam folder though!!

  3. I'm actually not having any problems with the new word verification, Sue. It's only the odd occasion that I get it wrong, and then it goes through ok the second time I try it. Perhaps I shouldn't have said anything, it's Sods law that I'll start having problems now that I've said that. I would just do whatever you feel comfortable with.

    1. I found the first new verification a pain with the cloudy patch - I just couldn't make out some letters. Iy must have been a nightmare for anyone who had poor vision

  5. I'm trying AGAIN to leave you a comment. I think I'm going to turn off word-verification on my blog. I have only had a very few spam comments, and I have had several genuine comments that Blogger consigned to Spam, so it's hardly reliable, but I'd just keep an eye on the contents of my Spam folder and delete / move content as appropriate.

When you leave a comment on my blog are you presented with a captcha code, or do you still see the old version?

P.S. You earlier comment on my blog appeears to as made at 18:22, which is probably correct...

    1. So now I've turned off verification you have managed it. I went to check your captcha code on your blog but you had already disabled it so I'm afraid you have a daft comment from me!

I'll check my clock settings as my timings seem out!

  6. I wonder if folks are aware, that little circle arrow when clicked gives another choice of words to try, and another and another if one isn't happy with what is showing?

I do prefer the newly adjusted word verification though.

    1. I don't know about everyone else but I was aware of that Bren - the revised version is better but to be honest I comment on lots of blogs and using the old code was quicker. It did the job as I didn't get machine messages - from what I've read the new code is easily cracked by machines anyway!

    1. There's going to be no point Blogger having word verification if no-one is using it is there? They should have left things as it was.

  8. I have been away for sometime and I was surprised to see how long and difficult to read the word verification now. Just realised that they made some changes again. I have to remember to moderate my comment box later.

  9. If it is like my system Diana you get an email and can moderate from your email message

  10. I use Wordpress and there is an option to only moderate comments from new commenters. I find it really useful as the majority of comments go straight up but the occasional one from someone new I have to approve. Does Blogger not have something similar? For the record my current record of attempts to try and get the word verification right stands at 6 - life is too short!

  11. Sue, I'm being thick (perhaps it's because it's late and I'm only on the PC 'cos I can't sleep). How do I turn off the word verification. I've had a look at Settings but I can't see it.

Like everyone else, HATE the new options, why do Blogger feel they have to change things which don't need fixing?

    1. Apparently Google have bought the firm that designed the new system so I guess we'll be stuck with it - apparently it is especially a nightmare on small screens such as mobile phones!

  13. I liked the old system they had, the shorter word verification. Suppose they changed it as techies figured it out? I would have voted to go back to the old word verification system. I can't read those blurred words at the best of times and having two of them to type in is dire. I'll probably remove it completely from my blog (although I fear spam nasties!)

    1. They won't go back having bought the company Kelli. I guess it was more acquiring a lucrative company that inspired them. As it stands it's a backwards step as most people are now dumping the verification altogether!

  14. I think that I am going to turn the word verification off for a few days and see what happens. The only comments that have ever been in my spam are real ones. I'm not around the computer enough to have comment moderation on.

    1. I'll be interested to see how you get on with that Robin as when we are out and about more gardening moderation will be a bit of a pain.

    2. Robin, I turned the verification off at the weekend and haven't had any spam yet (although Stats show an increase in traffic, mainly it seems, because of links from other Bloggers who also don't like the new system).

As/when spam starts it is the work of seconds to hit the delete key.

Thank you for visiting and leaving a comment - it is great to hear from you and know that there are people out there actually reading what I write! Come back soon.
(By the way any comments just to promote a commercial site, or any comments not directly linked to the theme of my blog, will be deleted)
I am getting quite a lot of spam. It is not published and is just deleted. I have stopped sifting through it and just delete any that ends up in my spam folder in one go so I am sorry if one of your messages is deleted accidentally.
Comments to posts over five days old are all moderated.
