Exciting News

We have babies in the nest box!

We don't know whether these babies are boys or girls but at last count we think we have sixso far.

Yesterday the female blue tit seemed to be shuffling uncomfortably on her nest and when she moved we caught sight of a nestling.

It took us by surprise as we weren't expecting any hatching 'til next week. We eventually counted three chicks yesterday and six today.

They already gape when a parent bird enters the nest with food. The male is toing and froing regularly bringing in ting grubs or greenfly that he is hopefully clearing from our garden.Updated video clip from yesterday can be viewed from the link on the sidebar. Apologies for the blurry images but the more movement the blurrier the video becomes. Live video is fine.

What a day yesterday was - it even rained a bit and Martyn also had a close encounter of his own with some garden wildlife that gave him quite a shock as he explains in his blog here (This link may not have been working earlier).

  1. How exciting. I bet you can't stop watching, I know I wouldn't be able to. I think there's a problem with your link to Martyn's blog.

  2. Hi Jo, It is exciting the chicks are like miniature plucked chickens. Thanks for the advice about my link - I've sorted it I hope - let me know if not

  4. I'm afraid, Diana, that at the moment the only ones to think they are cute would be mum and dad!

  6. How fantastic! I've no camera in our nest box, so I've no idea whether our pair even has eggs yet.

  7. Great to have a camera in there so you can keep tabs on them.

  8. Janet, If you go near to the box when a parent bird has just entered if chicks are there you will hear them squawking. Also once chicks have hatched parent bird activity in and out will speed up.

It's fascinating Damo - the problem is when I upload video to YouTube it makes the images bigger and blurry so I need to figure out if I can upload original size images

  11. This is great...I never did get any boxes to put up and i know it's now too late for this year but I think I will start looking around so they are well weathered for next year...can't wait to see the babies moving about.

  12. Blue tits were investigating our box days after it was first put up so didn't worry about it looking new. Tanya.

The babies have started to come out of the nest box and spread their wings - I'll be popping the latest video up some time later today.

  13. Just to correct my last comment the babies are not out of the nest BOX - it should have said Nest CUP which is still inside the box. The cup is the hollow bit in which the female laid her eggs.
